First National Triathlon Day launched successfully in Surrey
Swimmers, triathletes and newbies welcomed to Divers Cove to give it a ‘tri’
The very first National Triathlon Day was launched in Surrey on 7th May, with people of all ages and abilities welcomed to Divers Cove for a free celebration of the sport.
Hosted by performance triathlon and open water swim brand Zone3, the event brought together newcomers, experienced triathletes, coaches and elite athletes for an afternoon focused on introducing more people to triathlon and open water swimming.
Special guests included Kieran Lindars, who recently set a new British Ironman record at IRONMAN Texas, alongside British Triathlon High Performance Coach Scott Hill. Visitors had the opportunity to meet the athletes, ask questions during a live Q&A session and receive expert coaching advice throughout the evening.
Attendees were able to demo Zone3 kit, with expert fit advice, try open water swimming, take part in bike sessions on turbo trainers and enjoy walking or running around the scenic surroundings of Divers Cove. No prior experience was required, with the event designed to encourage as many people as possible to discover the sport.
The event also supported Level Water, the charity dedicated to providing children with disabilities with the opportunity to swim. Contributions were collected throughout the evening and the launch also marked Zone3’s commitment to donate £1 to Level Water for every pair of goggles sold during the season.
A new national day for triathlon
Despite triathlon being enjoyed by millions of people around the world, there had previously never been a dedicated national day celebrating the sport.
Zone3 launched the inaugural National Triathlon Day to celebrate all aspects of triathlon and encourage greater participation across swimming, cycling and running. The company hopes the day will continue to grow each year with support from the wider triathlon industry both in the UK and internationally.
Partner stalls and activities throughout the launch helped create a vibrant atmosphere around the first ever National Triathlon Day, with visitors able to engage with brands, athletes and coaches across the event.
Divers Cove and its staff hosted the event and supported activities throughout the evening, while visitors were also able to meet representatives from Level Water, Hello Lager, Shokbox Bike Boxes, as well as experience Ribble Bikes and nutrition supplies from X-Miles. Natasha Sones, author of Swimming Wild in South East England, also attended to speak with guests about open water swimming locations across the region.
Who was involved
Zone3 team members were joined throughout the day by leading names from the triathlon community.
Kieran Lindars attended fresh from his record-breaking performance in Texas, while Scott Hill shared insights from his experience as a British Triathlon High Performance Coach and former Performance Director and Head Coach for the Royal Air Force Triathlon Team.
Representatives from the brand spoke to members of the press and public throughout the event about the growth of triathlon, how accessible the sport can be and what people need to get started.
